City hosted its second successful Property Developers Forum

The City’s Spatial Planning and Environment (SP&E) directorate hosted its second Property Developer’s Forum yesterday, 11 November 2024. This is a key engagement on the City’s calendar as it is an opportunity to identify and address the challenges faced by the property development sector in Cape Town. The Property Development Forum is among the City’s initiatives; programmes and strategies leveraged to expedite development applications; building plan approvals and to fostering a business-friendly environment at the municipal level, which is conducive to property development. This relatively new platform was launched with the first meeting in June this year and is designed specifically for property developers to engage directly with the City and for true collaboration to be fostered.

‘As the City of Cape Town, we have committed to work with the private sector to fix what is necessary and to create a stimulating and prosperous City for all its people. This forum focuses on addressing and resolving critical challenges that impede property development. Together, we hope to identify these main issues and collaboratively devise solutions to overcome them,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The second iteration of this event included updates on the Development Approval Management System (DAMS) by the Development Management department as well as updates on the Development Management Optimisation Programme (DMOP).

In addition, the forum featured a panel moderated by Deputy Mayor, Alderman Eddie Andrews and comprised of the Executive Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis; Executive Director for SP&E, Robert McGaffin and Geraldine Liebenberg. The panel offered property developers a direct platform to engage, allowing them to raise technical questions; process-related concerns and other specific issues that needed to be addressed.

‘By understanding your challenges, we can address gaps and ensure a more inclusive, collaborative approach to unlock economic development in our City,’ said Alderman Andrews while on the panel.
